About tides at Key West, FL

Key West sits at the western end of the Florida Keys, the long arc of low coral islands that runs from Biscayne Bay south-west toward the Dry Tortugas. The tide gauge on the harbour reads one of the more unusual signatures in the continental United States. The pattern is mixed semidiurnal leaning diurnal — most days produce two highs and two lows of very unequal size, and on some days one of the cycles flattens out almost to nothing. Mean range is small, around 0.4 metres, climbing past 0.6 on the bigger spring tides. The Atlantic on the south side of the island and the Gulf of Mexico on the north each push their own tide curve through the inter-island channels, and the phase difference produces tide rips at Cow Key, Boca Chica, and the bridge cuts that run sharper than the height swing implies. Flats fishers reading the table for tarpon and bonefish work the change of tide more than the absolute level. The lowest spring lows of the month expose the inshore patch reef and grass flats around the harbour for an hour or two. Predictions come from NOAA CO-OPS station 8724580. Hurricane season runs June through November.

Tide questions about Key West, FL

When is the next high tide at Key West?

The hero block shows the next high tide at the Key West harbour gauge in local Eastern time. The 7-day table covers all daily extremes. The asymmetry between the two daily cycles is large here — one high can be 30 cm and the other 5 cm on the same day — so always check the actual heights rather than assuming both highs are similar.

Why is the tide pattern at Key West so unusual?

Key West sits between two open seas — the Atlantic to the south and the Gulf of Mexico to the north — that carry different tide signals. Where the two interact across the inter-island passes the Atlantic semidiurnal forcing partially cancels with the more diurnal Gulf signal. Mean range stays small (around 0.4 metres) and the daily pattern can shift week to week as the relative amplitudes change.

Where do these tide predictions come from?

NOAA CO-OPS station 8724580 in Key West Harbour. NOAA's harmonic predictions for stations with mixed signals like this one model multiple constituents and produce navigation-grade accuracy under normal weather, even when the daily pattern looks irregular at a glance.

When is best for flats fishing around Key West?

Most flats anglers work the change of tide more than absolute height — the moving water gets fish onto and off the flats. The 7-day table flags each day's high and low times. For tarpon work, the morning incoming around dawn is a regional standard. Wind shift, water clarity, and barometric pressure each matter as much as the tide curve.

Is this safe to use for navigation?

No. For piloting in the Keys backcountry, the channels between islands, or in or out of Key West Harbour use NOAA's authoritative chart products, the Florida Keys NOAA chart 11442 series, and the latest USCG notices. The shallow patch reef, the bridge cuts, and the strong reversing currents in the inter-island passes all reward real navigational sources.
